  • Horrible Histories, Wales

    Danny, 13, 8 Tach 2008

This is a good book with some funny jokes but not very accurate history. For example the piece on Owain Glyndwr was completely wrong. This book portrayed it as a peasant’s uprising when in fact it was that Owain Glyndwr had a boundary dispute with his neighbour and one time he went over the boundary with some peasants and slaughtered everyone on the other side. He then carried on and along the way other peasants joined him. At the end when they had won against the English and his followers found out what he was really like they turned against him. The part of this book that stood out to me like a sore thumb was the part about Dic Penderyn. This piece doesn’t mention once about the reason they were rioting other than the bad housing. The workers found it unfair that they were paid in tokens that they could only use in their boss’ shops. This meant that every day their boss got the profit from their hard work and they weren’t earning any real money. Not all their boss’ shops had everything they needed in them and they couldn’t spend the tokens anywhere else. It's not as good as I hoped and I was a bit dissapointed that they didn't mention Doctor Who at all, it's the best thing that's happened to Wales for me.
  • Here Lies Arthur

    Danny, 13, 8 Tach 2008

Here Lies Arthur is a brilliant piece of work written by a talented author. I really enjoyed the story and couldn’t put the book down. My only problem was that the beginning was hard to wade through and in some places a little confusing. I thought it was brilliant the way that Phillip Reeve created Arthur and how he told us that everything we knew about Arthur was a lie. Although I like the old stories about Arthur and his Knights I found this book interesting and the way that the old stories and this story seemed to contrast together. I thought it was amazing the way that his story explained where many of the old myths came from and the way that you saw in the writing how everything about that world was corrupted. I loved the way that it told you that Arthur was made up of stories and that was how he got on, it showed to me a little of the power of words. The largest complaint about it I have is the cover. I didn’t think that that was a suitable cover for the story type and in the beginning the cover put me off the story. I really enjoyed the book being written from the point of view of a young girl who never seemed to grow up althugh all those around her did, and I liked the way she knew about how boys and girls felt and could relate to what both genders did.

It took a while to get into. It only starts to really get interesting when you reach about chapter six.

I thought the way "Here lies Arthur" was written was really well done. Although, it takes a few chapters before you start to get sinked into it! Also, I thought that the way it was written was a very good way to tell the story of Arthur.

I thought it was okay... But! It didn't go into a lot of detail about some of the things, and they missed out a lot of important facts!

It's alright. It takes a while to get going, but after it gets going its alright. It's rather interesting what you can change about the legends of Arthur. I think Philip Reeve is quite a good author. My favourite bit so far is when she meets a she he and as she's a he she and they bond which is good for people in the same situation bonding !
  • Comparing "Here Lies Arthur" and "Horrible Histories, Wales"

    Conor Page-Harries, 18 Tach 2008

Both books have info about King Arthur. "Here lies Arthur" is an obvious book about King Arthur; and "Horrible Histories, Wales" talks about how King Arthur came from Wales!

    Here Lies Arthur
From the chapters i've read, it is good. There is a lot of description included in various paragraphs, which gives the reader an image in thier mind of what is happening. The only confusing part about it is when Gwyna, the main character, says that she knew Arthur already from the future, and yet it was being told as if it was happening at that moment. I do reconmend to read it, but it does take a few chapaters to get into.
  • Horrible Hstories, Wales

Chloe hasn't read this but I have and it's so annoying it's making my blood boil. I like the design of our club, I wonder who did that? (me)
